Pink Rain Lily

Published by Melissa under Nature, Pet Sitting-San Antonio

I’ve noticed these long pink flowers that only bloom after we have a rain.  Of course, we’re in a MAJOR drought down here in San Antonio, but occasionally, we get a sprinkle of rain.  Then these flowers come up.

It must have “sprinkled” again this past weekend when I was gone from the house during the day.  These flowers have once again bloomed:

They are native to Mexico so I guess it’s not a far stretch that they are here in San Antonio.  Their Botanical name: Zephyranthes carinata    Family: Amaryllidaceae (amarlyllis family).

Yellow Crowned Night Heron

Published by Melissa under Nature, Pet Sitting-San Antonio

Tonight, while I was outside doing some hand watering, I saw this Yellow Crowned Night Heron in the tree.  Fortunately, I was able to snap a picture before he flew away!

Invaded By Cicadas

Published by Melissa under Nature, Pet Sitting-San Antonio

This must be the year for the Cicadas as they are “chirping” very noisily lately.  It seems as though every morning, they are outside and for some reason, like the tires of my car.

Here’s some pictures:

Lizards Are Getting Free Meals

Published by Melissa under Nature, Pet Sitting-San Antonio

Well with all the flies I’m killing around here, the lizards are pretty darn happy.   Although it’s not as bad as the first few days they were here, I’m still killing on average of about 20 a day.  And now, the lizards can almost time my delivery…it’s pretty comical but I’ve still been unable to catch them in the act of actually eating one of the flies I’m tossing to them.  But here’s a pic I got shortly after one of them came and scarfed down some flies:

The Flies Are Here…The Lizards Are Happy!

Published by Melissa under Nature, Pet Sitting-San Antonio

So today I am noticing flies.  ALOT of flies.  Yesterday there were a couple, which I thought odd because we just don’t have flies in this house.  But today, there are LOTS.  I’ve killed at least 50 and it’s barely noon!  This must mean that the original dead rat (that they were never able to find) has entered the maggot-hatching stage and is producing all of these flies (YUCK!).  Some of the flies are absolutely HUGE…what I would call a Horse-Fly…they are gigantic.  There are so many that I am carrying around the fly-swatter as I move from room to room.  They apparently like the light, so I’m now purposely keeping the shudders open on the windows and sort of trapping them there…then I come along with the fly-swatter and WHAM!  Then I’m collecting the flies and throwing them outside the front door.

The first few times I did this, I didn’t think much about it until one time, I threw out about 4 flies.  Then I came back inside and within about 10 minutes, killed another 5 flies and went outside to throw them into the “fly pile”, except the original 4 flies were gone and 2 lizards ran off!  So this is good, I’m killing the flies and providing the lizards with food!   Love how nature works!

Still Have Hummingbirds

It’s pretty late in the year and very hot here, to still have humminbirds flying around.  But everyday, here they are.  The hummingbird wars continue right outside my window and I have the pleasure of watching them when I’m on the computer.

Here’s a couple pictures I snapped of a female Black-Chinned Hummingbird.

Uneventful Day….Finally!

Well today nothing bad happened!  The AC is still working and the smell from the dead rat(s) is starting to dissipate.  There was a really nice cool breeze this morning, so I went out to my favorite spot on the deck overlooking the river and just read and listened to the birds in the trees.  Saw a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron and Golden-Fronted Woodpecker.  Unfortunately, didn’t get any pictures of the birds, but I did take a picture of the property owners “outside” kitty, Mittens.  She’s very photogenic!

Also, snapped some pictures of some pretty flowers that are blooming right now.  Despite being in the middle of June and in a drought, here’s some pretty flowers:

I’m only able to identify the 2nd flower, Purple Coneflower.  Since I am a Naturopath, I recognized this plant easily because it’s botanical name, Echinacea Purpurea is an herb that I am well familiar with.  I use it in my practice and of course, take it myself when I’m feeling like a cold or the flu is coming on.  It grows well here, because it does enjoy full sun and that’s a good thing in our Texas weather!  The leaves can be steeped in a tea to help build strong immunity.

Another Extraordinary Bird

Well last night, I was preparing food for one of the cats, when I heard all this racket outside.  The Mockingbirds and the Jays were going crazy.  I’ve heard this before and I know they have a particular call when they are mad and when the Hawk is in the yard.  I’ve seen this Hawk numerous times; but always on the go.  I can never get near him.  Well today was different.  I went out the backdoor and he was perched in the tree just a few feet away from the backdoor.  I ran back in to get my camera.  He saw me right away, but never moved.  I eventually made my way to directly underneath him; about 6 feet away.  He didn’t seem to care and I snapped so many pictures that my battery started to die in my camera!  (especially after all the picture taking the day before with the Lesser Nighthawk).

After exhausting my picture taking, I grab the binocs and the bird book again.  This is a Red Shouldered Hawk and he was just beautiful!

Is that a rock?

So I’m sitting outside this morning on the front steps waiting for the neighbor friend to come and pick up Riley for her daily feeding duties.  Riely is really doing well…he’s eating alot and growing a little bit, but he still requires ALOT of attention and feeding and I’m so glad we have a neighbor that can help me!
It’s really a nice morning outside and I’m playing with Riley on the stairs and I look down at the foot of the stairs and see this “rock”.  I think….hmm…. that’s an odd place for a rock to be.  There are no rocks like that around here?!  Then I realize, it’s a bird.  After an hour and tons of pictures, and much time on the binocs with book in hand, I have come to the conclusion….Lesser Nighthawk, Female (baby).  She must have just gotten her wings.  She let me photograph her for a long time.  Then when the sun started shining in her eyes, she woke up….flew towards me.  Then flew up, and at that exact moment, a grackle attacked her.  She fell to the ground, screaming.  I ran…picked her up.  Thought for sure her wing was broken.  She was ok.  Let her go….she hopped around a bit; allowed me to photograph her some more.  Then flew across the street (barely) and landed on the sidewalk.  I checked on her a few minutes later, right about the time a guy walking his dog came by…she flew again, back towards me; flew around the house and then went down to the San Antonio River and flew away.

Well they have this plant here, that I believe is from Hawaii and the flowers used to make leis.  I believe this is a type of Plumeria plant.  The flowers are gorgeous and the scent intoxicating.

Enjoying My Time Here

Published by Melissa under Nature, Pet Sitting-San Antonio

Well the property owners are set to leave for Europe in a week.  So I am really enjoying being here and “not working” yet!  Don’t have to walk the dog or do any cat-related duties yet.  So I’m not officially house or pet sitting yet; just enjoying the house and the grounds and hanging out by the river.  The time will come soon enough, that I will be BUSY!  So I’m enjoying the peacefulness of this place and so grateful to be here.

Went to the Rio Grande Valley

Well before the property owners leave on their trip, I decided that I would take one last final trip before I am tied-down to a house and unable to do any traveling.  So the last few days, went down to the Rio Grande Valley to see a friend.  Specifically, went to Weslaco, Mission, McAllen, South Padre Island, etc.

I left on Tuesday, April 21st and drove down.  Saw a few Red-Tail Hawks on telephone poles as I went.  Also, saw a Crested Cara Cara and a few Green Jays.  Made it to Weslaco, but then promptly left and drove down to South Padre Island.  I had never been before, but it sure is alot different than Port Aransas!  First of all the bridge you have to cross to get there is long and I’m not a fan of bridges!  But it worked out alright.  The beach was really beautiful and clean and the water very blue (again unlike Port Aransas).  But the island itself is VERY crowded.  Obviously lots of hotels and condos; I’m sure during Spring Break that place is crazy!  Very “touristy” and definitely not my kind of place.

But nevertheless, wanted to watch the ocean for awhile so first, went to a place called Wanna Wanna” and had a beer and sat and watched a paraglider guy try to fight the wind.  He did pretty well, but in the end I think he just got tired of the wind and called it a day.

Next went to “Wahoo Saloon” which is on the inland side of the island.  It was an awesome place to sit and have a drink and watch the sun go down.  I highly recommend it, but be sure to get there early.  Here’s some pics I took while relaxing with a Bailey’s:

On the way back, stopped at Port Isabel Lighthouse.  Unfortunately, they were closed and it was close to dark and could not snap any pictures. But it looks like a very cool little place with ecclectic little shops and restaurants.  Definitely will have to go back there.

On Wednesday, I got up and went to the “World Birding Center-Estero Llano Grande” in Weslaco.

Estero Llano Grande State Park

Estero Llano Grande State Park

This was a bird lovers paradise.  Very lush lands, lots of water, covered deck for watching the wildlife and lots of trails.  I saw several “new” birds for me that I can now officially add to my list.  Overall, I logged 30 different species of birds, but I was only able to get two pictures of birds…..Couch’s Kingbird and Sora Rail:

In addition to the birds, also saw this Red-Eared Slider and Rabbit:

And for me, the coolest part about my visit to this park was this lizard, eating another lizard.  It took alot of digging and several emails to the park officials to identify this lizard.  But apparently it’s called a Rose-Bellied Lizard.  It was determined that it was a juvenile, but it’s still a cool looking lizard!  Be sure to click on the picture so that it zooms in; the detail on the lizard is pretty amazing!

Wednesday, April 23rd I decided to visit the Harlingen Arroyo Colorado Refuge in Harlingen, Texas.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures of any birds, but I enjoyed the walk which was partially on the Colorado River.  Then I went to “The Thicket” which apparently is a new place in Harlingen called the Harlingen Thicket Bird Sanctuary.  It’s still under some development, but there are lots of trails there too.  I had the 40 acres all to myself and roamed around alot, but didn’t see or hear much.  I did capture this cool picture of an old railroad bridge.

From there, I drove all the way back to McAllen and went to Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center in McAllen, Texas.  This was a gorgeous facility.  The building itself was beautiful, but the grounds were immaculate.  It wasn’t very large, but there were some great little trails and the birds were abundant.

Overall, I had a great time down in the Valley.  Came back with some wonderful fresh oranges and grapefruit that were juicy and wonderful!  My advice if you want to go, make April the very last month!  It’s already in the 90’s down here most days and it’s still Springtime!

Settling In

Well I’m finally all moved in; out of my apartment; everything (well almost everything) is in storage and I am finally feeling like I’m settled.  And I’m tired!  But I’ve been enjoying the wildlife around here.   There is a very large Pecan and Cypress tree out in the back of the house, right next to the San Antonio River.  The Egrets and Herons love to sleep in that tree, so I’ve been busily snapping some pictures around here:

First day at new house

After an exhausting day of moving things to storage and going back and forth between storage and my apartment, I’m finally at my new house.  Official moving day is in 2 days, but my bedding and everything is already packed up and in storage, which is the reason why I have moved into this house 2 days earlier.  I didn’t have anywhere to sleep!  It’s wonderful that my property owners have allowed me to move in a  few days early….it really helped me out!

So I’m here and exhausted.  Decided to sit outside down on the overlook of the San Antonio River.

Sitting on the San Antonio River

It’s  a very nice spot down here and I can watch various birds flitting about.  After awhile, I realized there were several large birds in the Cypress Tree.  Turns out they were lots of different species of Herons and Egrets:  Snowy Egrets, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron, Black-Crowned Night Heron, etc.  Also there were lots of warblers around, but I couldn’t see any of them well enough to identify!  I’m hope soon I’m able to get pictures of them.

Took a break and went to the coast

Well I felt like I’m pretty well organized.  I got alot done this past week.  So this weekend I decided to head down to Port Aransas for some much-needed R&R.  Ate at one of my favorite places, Shell’s in Port Aransas which has a very fabulous menu and everything is FRESH FRESH FRESH.  If you go, make sure you go EARLY.  Typically standing-room only in that place as there are only a handful of tables.  But it’s worth the wait!  YUM.

Also, got to do one of my favorite things which is to feed the seagulls and walk on the beach and listen to the ocean.  Also, went to my favorite birding spot…..Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center.  Got some great pics:

Took a Nature Break

Well had to take a break from all this packing.  Today, went to Guadalupe River State Park in Spring Branch, Tx and then went onto Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg, Texas

It was a gorgeous day…..the river was beautiful at Guadalupe Park:

After doing some hiking, had a picnic and was fortunate enough to snap this picture of a Carolina Chickadee:

Then went onto Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg.  That place was PACKED today…gorgeous weather outside and beautiful plants and gardens to see.  One of my favorite things about this place is the Butterfly Garden area that they have.  It’s literally filled hundreds of different species of butterflies and since I’m a butterfly nut, I had to take tons of pictures!  My favorite in the Butterfly Garden is the Mexican Bluewing.  I have never seen one of those before and it was simply exquisite.  The purples and blue!  Too beautiful for words.  On the grounds of the Wildseed Farms, I took the picture of the White-Lined Sphinx Moth….aka “the Hummingbird Moth”….if you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing one, you might find them on cool evenings at dusk.  Surprisingly this one was out feeding on flowers in the middle of the day, but most of the times when I’ve seen them, it’s in the evening time trying to get that last bit of nectar.  They are just like hummingbirds in that their wings move extremely fast and are often confused as being birds but in fact are a moth.
