Oreo Got Adopted!

I got an email last night from the Humane Society SCPCA here in San Antonio….Oreo was adopted yesterday!  He went home with a great family and apparently, they adopted another kitten along with him, so he has a playmate!  I’m so thankful that he has found a new home and that the family was gracious and loving enough to adopt another kitten for him to have a friend.

I’ve been going to see him at the Humane Society for the last week.  I’ve been to visit him 3 times and it was hard to see him there.  Yesterday, I went during lunchtime. They have private rooms with lots of cat toys so that prospective new “parents” can have a get-acquainted session with the animal they are thinking about adopting.  So I had him in one of those rooms and played with him for about 1/2 hour.  It was good to see him again and he purred and played and we had a great time!  It was hard to put him back in the cage and leave him again!  I said a little prayer while there that he would find a nice family to go to as he is a very special little kitty!

So later to get an email that said he had been adopted was a relief! I admit to being a little sad…(still have lots of emotions about missing the kittens!), but I’m joyous and thrilled that he has a family now!  I hope he lives a long and happy life with his new family.

Oreo @ Humane Society

Well after Riley and Merlin were adopted yesterday, Oreo became extremely VOCAL.  WAY more so than usual and if I didn’t know better, I would say he had some Siamese in him!  He became very needy and literally followed me from room to room.  If I dare leave him behind, he would start screaming and howling just like a Siamese.

Needless to say, last evening, overnight and this morning were challenging.  He obviously wants to be with other animals or in my lap.  All the time.   It not only was stressing him out, but stressing me out and the 17-year old cat, Amadeus.  Amadeus does not like Oreo’s howling and crying and it really upset him a great deal.  So I can tell that this isn’t going to work long term.  I was hoping that Oreo could just “hangout” with me for awhile….be a lap kitty and be content.  But he’s much too playful….not surprising since he is just about 7-8 weeks old and he wants to play ALL THE TIME!  I can’t be his playmate (as much as it would be cool to play on the floor with him all the time!) and Amadeus is definitely not interested in being his playmate either!  Since I’ve not been successful on my own in getting him adopted, I don’t have any choice and I have to call the Humane Society.

Fortunately for me, I have a good friend at the Humane Society of Bexar County who arranged for me to bring him in this afternoon.  They were wonderful and obviously, since Oreo is so cute, they think he’ll get adopted right away.  Of course, he’ll get neutered immediately and then, put up for adoption.  I’ll be following his progress closely and I’ll report back about his adoption progress.  I’m setting the intention that he’ll get adopted by a loving family who will have a playmate for him.

In the meantime, I heard back from the family that adopted Merlin and Riley.  Apparently, there was a ‘bump’ in the road while introducing the two new kittens to their dogs……so let’s just say that all is well now, but the introductions will take place a little slower next time!  I don’t think the kitties appreciated meeting the German Shepherd and Pomeranian just yet!  So for now, they are safe and sheltered in their own room and they will have very slow introductions to the dogs.  They are adjusting well and here is a cute picture of them together:

Merlin and Riley in their new home

Merlin and Riley in their new home

So tonight, I’m going to clean up the house….put all the kitten-related toys and beds and kitty litter boxes away.   I can put all the chairs back around the dining room table again.  I’m having lots of mixed emotions right now.  Part of me is glad this kitten rescue adventure is over…it’s been a long two months.  But the other part of me that so loved having them all here, is very sad and emotional.  I already miss playing with all of them, and I expect to hear them rough-housing on the carpet any minute.  It will take some getting used to not having them around now.  So right now, I’m sad. :(    I’m going to go and spend some time with Amadeus, since I’ve not been as attentive to him the last several weeks because the kittens have taken so much of my time.  I’m sure he will appreciate the attention!  ♥

Kitten Adoption Day

Well today is the day.  A friend of the homeowner’s has a friend that is interested in Riley (the black cat).  She has been set to come over for weeks now, but it seems as though everytime we set it up, something happens. First, the kittens had diarrhea; then ringworm.  Now, since they are all healed up and there is no more ringworm in the house, we set up today for a visit.

They came about 2:00.  Riley and Merlin both ran right up to them.  Originally, they were coming with the intention to just get one kitten.  At first they were interested in Riley; but then I sent pictures and they seemed to like Merlin.  But Riley wouldn’t leave her husband alone!  He curled up in his lap and really bonded with him.  And of course everybody loved Merlin!

So Merlin and Riley have a new home.  Now Merlin is known as “Snickers” and Riley’s new name is “Marvin”.

Oreo is left behind.  He doesn’t like this and is voicing his displeasure.  I know this is stressful for him; he’s wandering around now looking for his friends.  He seems really traumatized and I’m sure is upset.  So I’m giving him the Bach Rescue Remedy which I know will help him to be calm.

I’m certainly sad to see those two little kittens go, but it never was the intention to keep them.  I’m glad they have found a good home.  Now, I must find a good home for Oreo:

Kittens Resting

Well all 3 kittens are acting lethargic and tired.  The 2nd round of booster vaccinations really has taken it’s toll on them and I think wiped them out.  So they are all huddled together in the chair, resting.  I hope they snap out of it by Sunday because that’s Adoption Day!

Here’s a picture of them all cuddled together on the chair:

Final Visit To the Vet

Took all 3 rescue kittens back to the vet today for a final check.  Great news…the ringworm is officially GONE!  They used the blacklight to see if there were any “hot” spots; NONE!  So the treatment has finally worked.

We also had another once over of all 3 of the kittens.  Since I have a woman coming on Sunday to look at them for adoption purposes, I just wanted to be sure all is well.  They got another dose of worming medicine and their 2nd set of booster shots.

They are officially ready!  So I hope that one (or all) of them find a good home….we’ll see what Sunday brings with that visit.

Kitties Playing

Well the kitties got into my file box today.  I guess they thought this was a fun thing to do and I managed to get my camera and get some pictures before they all jumped away! They have all healed up nicely from the ringworm and I’m excited because this upcoming weekend, I’ve got someone coming to look at them for adoption!  So I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that they get a good home soon!

Ringworm Better

Well today I’ve finally noticed that my ringworm has improved.  I’ve been using two things regularly and I think they are both helping alot.

First, my  beloved Young Living Essential Oil Lavender which is really great for soothing the skin and for me, seemed to work better than the Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Oil after awhile.  I think the Melaleuca Oil helped to initially stop it from spreading, but it didn’t help the itching.  But the Lavender Oil helped alot.

The other thing I’ve been using is Tea Tree Relief Spray from Desert Essence.  This product is awesome too and I feel really helped me get over this.

Over the years as a Naturopathic Doctor, I have recommended Lavender Essential Oil to many of my patients to help prevent scars after injuries, surgeries or burns.  So I am continuing the Lavender Essential Oil to prevent scarring from the rings that the fungus has made on my skin.

The kittens are also improving.  No new spots on any of them and I can tell that they are slowly starting to heal.  I am also using the Relief Spray on them as I think it really helps to soothe their tender skin.

Back To The Vet

The ringworm is getting worse on Merlin and Riley.  Oreo, the culprit that originally brought ringworm to this house, has cleared up and is fine.  Isn’t that ironic?!  But in the meantime, Merlin has lost all of the hair around his mouth, in his whiskers and on top of his nose.  Now losing hair on his ears.  Riley has lost hair around his mouth too and now also on his ears.

So we return to the vet.  In addition to the shampooing which I must do twice per week, the Program pills which will give another dose of next week, now we have a new medication for them and some topical stuff to put on their lesions.  Since most of them are on their face, this has to be done very carefully with Q-Tips to ensure it doesn’t get in their eyes.

The medicine does not taste well, the vet warns me.  And I know this instantly in trying to give it to them.  I have to use a small syringe and squirt it down their throat.

I hope this procedure works but I think now it will just have to run it’s course.  So I imagine that it will be like this for another 10 days to 2 weeks.

In the meantime, I’m sanitizing everything so as to not contaminate the other cats here.  My lesions have not worsened, nor do I have any new spots, but they are not going away either.  Like the cats, I suspect I’ll have to deal with them for about 2 weeks until they run their course and go away.

Now I’ve Got It (Ringworm)

I guess all this exposure to the ringworm fungus has finally caught up with me.  What started as 2 small dots 2 days ago, has now erupted (or should I say exploded?!) into 30 spots all over my legs and arms.

The itching is driving me mad.  I think the Tea Tree Oil has helped stop the fungus from growing, but it hasn’t helped the itching.  So I went to the drugstore, I’ve tried Lotrimin which didn’t do a thing.  Now, I’m trying Campo-Phenique which stopped the itching immediately.   I’m covering it with NewSkin Liquid Bandage which helps to keep it from spreading.  It’s working in that I don’t have any new spots developing.  And it doesn’t itch anymore, so I hope I can sleep tonight!

Bathing Day For the Kittens

Well today all the kittens got a bath with the medicated anti-fungal shampoo that is supposed to kill ringworm.  Or at least slow it down.

Bathing kittens is fun.  First of all, they don’t like water and don’t like being wet at all.  Fortunately, they are still small enough that I can still hang on to them and their claws have not developed into lethal weapons yet.  But the thing about this shampoo is that they have to have to have it on their skin for 10 MINUTES!  It’s quite the challenge to keep them in the sink, soaking wet and covered in shampoo for 10 minutes.  They don’t like it and in particular, Oreo is VERY vocal about voicing his displeasure at this.

After the bath, comes the blowdrying.  None of them appreciate the fact that I’m using my hair blowdryer to get them dry.  I’m sure the noise scares them, but I don’t want them to get chilled either.  So they get about 1/2 dry and then back in their crate they go.

Of course now with all of them having this fungus, the crate has to be scrubbed down with Simple Green and Tea Tree (Melaleuca) Essential Oil to help kill the fungus.  I have to wash their bedding and toys too.  This keeps me busy most of the day!

Riley Has Ringworm

Well today Riley’s face is ALOT worse.  So I took all three kittens back to the vet.  Yep…it’s ringworm.  Apparently, they wanted me to shampoo the kittens from when I was there about 10 days ago, but they didn’t have the shampoo and they never got it in until yesterday….great!  I have a feeling that they never gave Riley or Merlin the “Program” the first time I took them in.  Only Oreo got it because he was the one that showed the ringworm.  Well now Riley has it.  So he was given the “Program” today and a bath along with Merlin and Oreo.  So we’ll see how that goes.  It was very frustrating there; lots of waiting and having to drive back later to pick them up.  And on top of which, the vets office is HIGHLY unorganized and extremely inefficient.  So I’m frustated and aggravated right now!  Must have a glass of wine!

Riley Has Something On His Face

I’m noticing something strange on Riley’s face.  Of course, he is SOLID black…there is not a speck of white (or any other color for that matter) on him anywhere.  But around his mouth and above his eyes look rather strange.  A little puffy, scaly…just plain odd.  Not sure what is going on but will keep an eye on it.

Kittens Have Diarrhea

Well the diarrhea that Merlin had the other day has gotten worse and now all three of them have it.  I don’t even need to take them to the vet to know:  it’s Coccidia.   Since the property owners have done cat rescue work for years, she has her own little “pharmacy” of medications that she’s needed in the past.  So I go and get the Albon which is an antibiotic to treat Coccidia.  The 3 kittens will get started on it today and will be treated continually for 14 days.

I’m Overwhelmed….Kitten Drama & Other Stuff

I took the 3 kittens to the vets office today.  Apparently, Oreo has brought Ringworm with him. They said that Merlin was OK and that Riley was OK, although Riley had a spot on his chin that was “suspect”.  So they were going to treat all 3 of them and give them “Program” which I guess is a medicine for ringworm.  They want me to shampoo them, but they do not have the shampoo that I need to do it.  Said they are all about 4-5 weeks old and that I need to return in 2 weeks for the 2nd dose of “Program” and for their initial shots.

Merlin also has a nasty case of diarrhea.  I mentioned it to the vet who said to keep an eye on it and if it continues, I’ll have to bring him back in for a culture.  Since I just got him, and we don’t know where he came from or what he had been eating, I’m hoping it’s just that his system is adjusting to the real food that I’ve been giving him for the last 2 days.  We’ll see how it goes.

My friend Joe came at lunch to take a look at the gutters.  It’s not really the gutter problem, but more how the water flows down the roof.  He hypothesizes that when it rains REALLY hard and fast (like it did the other day), that the water just comes flooding down the roof and overshoots the main gutter, only to land in the smaller gutter which can’t keep up with the water flow.  It then overflows and backs up.  This house is old and the gutters are built into the roof, so it’s easy to see how this happens.  There is nothing he can do to fix it; he does make a suggestion to add sort of a “dam” up on the roof to force the water into the larger gutter, thereby missing the smaller one and avoiding future flooding.  So I put him on the phone with my homeowners and he explains this to them.  Since we’re in the middle of summer and in the middle of a drought, there doesn’t seem to be any urgency to get this done now.  So perhaps after they return in the fall, they can address this issue.

The pest control people came again.  Despite the fact that they have set rat traps in both the main house and the guest house, there have been no captures.  And of course, every time they come out, there is a charge.  So I’m not sure how much longer we’ll deal with this routine.  But I think we’ll perhaps give it another week to see if anything shows up.

By the end of today, I’m wiped out.  Overwhelmed.  Between the rats, the smell, the various appointments to meet people, the flood in the dining room and all the kitten drama, I’m mentally fried.  This was supposed to be a “simple” house and pet sitting assignment!  I’ve done house and pet sitting for years and years; taken care of 30 horses and 50 dogs on large acreage.  And yet, I’ve never had all these issues happen within a span of about 3 weeks!  It’s very frustrating and I’m worried that the property owners are going to think I’m destroying their house!  So we have a long talk this evening.  I think she is just as frustrated.  This hasn’t really happened to them either; this is supposed to be a relaxing summer for them!  It seems like every time I call her, I have something new to report and it’s not good news!  She gives me a pep talk….tells me how much they appreciate what I’m doing and how I’m handling everything.  Said if this would have happened last year with the other housesitter, it would have been a disaster and they probably would have already been on their way back!  She also reminded me of the rescue work I’m doing with these kittens.  They most assuredly would not have survived to this point on their own.  Poor little Merlin would have been euthanized that day at the vet’s office had I not come and picked him up!  And now, the 3 of them have a chance to grow up and find a family to adopt and love them.

So by the end of the conversation, I felt much better.  The pep talk worked!

Yet ANOTHER kitten

Ok so now I think this is bordering on ridiculous.  The housekeeper showed up today with ANOTHER abandoned kitten!  This one was apparently hanging around her son’s school….I think he is a week older than Riley and Merlin.  He was in an area that had dogs, so she was concerned he would get eaten!  So here she comes with this cute kitten.

What am I supposed to do?  I can’t tell her to go away! So “Oreo” joins our kitten family.

Oreo

Oreo

Oreo

He’s got a funny spot on his right ear.  No hair there.  I hope it’s not mange.  It doesn’t look infected or anything; just a spot about the size of a dime with hair missing.  And also on top of his head, seems there are some thinning places where the hair isn’t quite as grown in as other places.  Not sure what that’s about, but will take him to the vet tomorrow to get checked out.

I’ve called the property owners of course, to let them know there is another kitten.  She laughs.  Well, this certainly wasn’t part of the original deal…..I was just supposed to be house and pet sitting for them!  We have a good talk; I guess I didn’t know it at the time (and neither did she!), but I’m apparently filling in for her doing all this cat rescue work.  It’s OK….I love animals and these kittens are definitely keeping me busy and amused.

Riley and Oreo have instantly bonded.  If I didn’t know better, I would say they were littermates.  It’s almost like they know eachother.  They play, play, play together!  Constantly.  So much so that I think it’s freaking out Merlin who only wants to be in my lap!

Another Kitten…..

Well I can’t believe it, but I have another kitten.  The property owners received a phone call today from her vet’s office.  Apparently, someone dumped off 3 little kittens.   The staff were able to get 2 of the 3 kittens, adopted.  But there was still one left and they needed to find a home for it or they were planning on euthanizing it.  Apparently, this has happened before.  These property owners are extremely generous people, with a very soft heart.  And I guess the staff at the vet’s know this, so they called her to see if she could help.  Since she’s in Minnesota, she called me…..what did I think about having a playmate for Riley?

Well….what’s one more kitten?  Riley already thinks I’m his mother and his playmate as he’s been isolated from the other cats that we have here.  So I think this is a fine idea.  It’s about time he had some exposure to other cats!

So I head out to the vet’s office to get this little guy.  We’ve decided his name is Merlin and here he is:

Riley Update

It looks like I *might* have a new home for Riley! Of course, he’s still barely 3-4 weeks old, and still being bottle fed, but I’m excited that perhaps there is someone that would like him.

Apparently, since the property owners have done cat rescue for such a long time, they have lots of contacts in the area.  Last year, they had adopted out a kitten to a woman who lives very closeby; she’s got a friend who at the time, had just lost her black cat. She wasn’t ready then to adopt one, but now some time has passed and she’s considering getting a black kitten. And I’ve got one! So this is good news and I’m going to start giving Riley some wet food and slowly weaning him off the bottle. We’ve gotten to the place where I don’t have to get up every 2 hours; it seems as though feeding him every 4-5 hours is working OK for him and it sure is helping me get more sleep!

Here’s some updated pictures of him:

Another Kitten……

Last night, the housekeeper showed up with an abandoned kitten that she had found.  He’s tiny, barely has his eyes open, so I suspect he’s about 10 days to 2 weeks old.  Wrapped him in a blanket and told me this story about how she heard him crying under an abandoned house; the mother apparently had left him and since there are lots of big dogs in that neighborhood, she didn’t feel comfortable leaving him.  Since she knows that the property owner does cat rescue work, she brought him to me.

Great!  Just what I need!  He’s just a baby and requires alot of attention and bottle feeding.  I tried to get her to take the kitten formula and to handle this herself, but that didn’t work.  So now I have a kitten to take care of, on top of the other duties and responsibilities I have here with the grounds and Amadeus and the 10 cats in the guest house!

Since I had just gone through this with Parker a few weeks ago, I knew where the formula was, the little crate, the stuffed animals and blankets for him.  So I set him up in the kitchen.  Made up a batch of kitten formula and proceeded to “nurse” him with a little baby “doll” bottle.  He was hungry and ate alot.  With kittens that are so young, it’s important that they are fed every 2 hours, so I feel like a new mom…had to get up every 2 hours last night to feed him.  He was grateful, I’m sure as his little body just constantly vibrates with purring everytime I touch him.  Also, it’s necessary that I “stimulate” him so that he urinates.  That is something that his mamma would have done if she were around.  So I took a soft cloth and rubbed him a bit, and then finally he urinated lots and lots.

I can handle taking care of him during the evening time, but I can’t feed him every 2 hours during the day!  I talked to the property owners this morning; she recommended that I call a neighbor friend of theirs; perhaps since she’s retired she could help out and do “day duty” of feeding him.  So I called her and thankfully, she was willing to help out.  So I got him all ready; made her up some formula, gave her an extra bottle and she came and picked him up.

So this is our routine; she will pick him up every morning and take the day shift; then I will pick him up after work in the evening, for the evening/night-time shift.  I’m so grateful to her for helping out; I never would have been able to do this without her!

He’s very sweet and solid black.  I’ve decided that his name is Riley.  Here he is:

Rescued Kitten Gets Adopted!

Well I talked with the property owners this morning.  She said that since she’s done LOTS of cat rescue work over the years, that it was almost expected that at some point, I would have to rescue a kitty.  So of course, “bring him to the house and this is what you do…..”, etc., etc.  So I went over to my friend Joe’s house and picked up “Parker” and brought him back here.

After a bath (he wasn’t very happy), I set him up in a large crate in the dining room with some kitten formula, small amount of wet food and some bedding and stuffed animals.  I also, snooped around online thinking perhaps someone had lost him.  I posted on Craigslist hoping to find his owner.  Can you believe it….a lady emailed me and said that if I didn’t get a response to let her know…she’s been looking for an orange/white stripey cat!

So I met DiAnne at HEB later today and she adopted Parker!  She used to be a Vet Tech and has lots of animal experience and he was just what she was looking for.  So less than 24 hours, Parker has been adopted and has a new home!  YAY!

Rescued a Kitten

Well I guess the Universe feels I need yet ANOTHER cat to take care of.  I’m not sure why; my pet sitting job is quite detailed already with 3 cats and a dog in the main house, the outside cat Mittens and then the 10 cats in the guesthouse!  But, today in between running around to my old apartment and taking care of my old “apartment cat” and then going back downtown to take care of Amadeus, I went to Office Max to get something.  When I came out, I looked across the parking lot towards my car and I see this orange “blur” thing.  What is that?

Turns out, it’s a orange-white stripey kitty.  Well I can’t leave him here.  So in the car with me he went.  I have not had this discussion with the property owners….can I bring in an outside cat to care for?  I needed to ask them before bringing a stray home.  So I called my friend Joe, who I sort of manipulated into taking.  LOL.  He couldn’t resist this face!  I have named him “Parker” (because I found him in a parking lot and it’s as close as I could get!).  Here’s a pic:
